How can you turn a photo into an illustration?

The Colour Illustration Tool transforms ordinary photographs into colourful artwork with smoother colour areas, drawn-style outlines and an illustrated finish. Instead of looking like a traditional photograph, your image takes on the appearance of artwork while still keeping the original subject clear and recognisable.

The app includes several ready-made styles as well as adjustable controls, allowing you to create anything from a gentle storybook illustration to a bold poster-style image.

What the app does

The tool softens photographic detail into larger areas of colour while adding carefully controlled outlines and subtle artistic textures. The result is a cleaner, more graphic image that works well for greetings cards, posters, presentations, social media graphics and creative projects.

You can start with one of the built-in presets or build your own illustration by adjusting each setting individually.

How to use the Colour Illustration Tool

Click Upload Image or drag a photograph into the upload area. Your original picture is displayed without any changes, allowing you to decide how much of the illustration effect you would like to apply.

Select one of the preset styles for a quick starting point or move the sliders to create your own look. The preview updates as you work, making it easy to experiment with different combinations.

When you're happy with the finished illustration, download it as a JPG, PNG or WebP image.

Understanding the controls

Illustration Strength controls how much of the artistic effect replaces the original photograph. Outline Strength increases or softens the drawn edges around objects, while Colour Simplification reduces fine photographic detail into broader areas of colour.

Colour Richness adjusts the intensity of the colours, Illustration Sharpness adds definition to the finished artwork and Paper Texture introduces a subtle textured surface. You can also use the Brightness control to lighten or darken the overall illustration.

Using presets and Randomise

The Storybook, Coloured Ink and Poster presets provide different artistic styles that can be used as starting points for your own illustrations. Each preset applies a balanced combination of settings which you can adjust further if required.

If you'd like to explore different effects quickly, the Randomise button automatically generates a fresh combination of illustration settings that can then be refined using the controls.

Editing with confidence

Undo and Redo allow you to step backwards and forwards through your recent changes, making it easy to compare different versions of your artwork.

The Original Image button restores your uploaded photograph whenever you want to begin again, so you can experiment freely without worrying about losing your starting image.
